About Us

The development of our university's Physics Department has gone through various stages until it reached its current state.

Istanbul Technical School Period (1937-1969):

During this period, the Physics Chair, which was formed within the Engineering departments, was integrated into the Geodesy and Cadastre Engineering (Harita ve Kadastro Mühendisliği), becoming the first department to offer education in its field in Turkey in 1949. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. A. Bedi ILGIM, alongside the Fundamental Physics courses, a specialized program in Modern Physics was introduced.

Istanbul State Academy of Architecture and Engineering Period (1969-1982):

In this period, the Physics Chair was affiliated with the Department of Basic Sciences and offered courses such as Fundamental Physics, Modern Physics, Measurement Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics to undergraduate and graduate students in engineering, as well as students from affiliated schools of the academy.

Yıldız University Period (1982-1992):

With the establishment of the Faculty of Science and Literature, the Physics Department was founded in Yıldız-Beşiktaş in 1982, and undergraduate physics education commenced in 1983. In addition to the undergraduate program, Master's and Ph.D. programs were also initiated under the Institute of Science. In 1985, the Physics Department moved from Beşiktaş to the Şişli Campus.

Yıldız Technical University Period (1992-present):

In the year 2000, the Physics Department moved from Şişli Campus to Davutpaşa Campus, where it has been conducting its educational, research, and development activities ever since.

The Physics Department offers education, research, and development activities in both fundamental and applied physics fields. The aim is to train physicists with laboratory experience and knowledge who can contribute to research, development, and technology production. In our university's teaching model, students in the Physics Department have the opportunity to pursue a double major. The department also offers Master's and Ph.D. programs.
